UN Endorses Morocco’s Sovereignty Claim for Western Sahara

The United Nations Security Council has approved a US-backed resolution supporting Morocco’s claim to Western Sahara, marking the strongest international endorsement yet for Rabat’s sovereignty plan despite Algeria’s objections.

The resolution, backed by 11 countries, describes Morocco’s proposal as a “basis for negotiation,” while omitting any reference to a referendum on independence long sought by the Polisario Front and its allies, including Algeria, Russia, and China.

Western Sahara, a phosphate-rich region formerly under Spanish rule until 1975, remains disputed between Morocco and the Polisario Front, which represents the Sahrawi people from refugee camps in southwestern Algeria.

Russia, China, and Pakistan abstained from the vote, while Algeria opposed the measure.
