Democratic nominee Zohran Mamdani has been elected as the 111th mayor of New York City, making history as the first Muslim to hold the position.
The 34-year-old Democratic Socialist and state assembly member from Queens won Tuesday’s election with over 50% of the vote, defeating former governor Andrew Cuomo and Republican candidate Curtis Sliwa.
Cuomo, 67, finished second with just over 40%, while Sliwa trailed with about 7%. Mamdani’s victory marks a significant moment in New York’s political history, reflecting a generational and ideological shift in the city’s leadership.
