Ethiopia: Volcano Hailey Goubbi Erupts After 10,000 Years

A long-dormant volcano in Ethiopia, known as Hailey Goubbi, has erupted for the first time in approximately 10,000 years—sending towering ash clouds drifting over the Red Sea toward Oman and Yemen. Scientists say the rare eruption is among the most unusual volcanic events in the region’s recorded history.

The eruption began around 8:30 a.m. GMT on Sunday, according to Volcano Discovery and a warning from the Toulouse Volcanic Ash Advisory Center (VAAC). Satellite data later confirmed a massive ash plume reaching an estimated 10–15 km high into the atmosphere.
