Irish PM Accuses Israel of Attempting to Silence Ireland Over Gaza Stance

Irish Prime Minister Simon Harris has accused Israel of trying to silence Ireland for its opposition to the war on Gaza, describing Israel’s decision to close its embassy in Dublin as « distraction diplomacy. »

Speaking in Dún Laoghaire on Tuesday, Harris stated that Israel cannot silence Ireland’s criticism of the attacks on Palestinians in Gaza. He expressed regret over Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s decision to close the embassy but reaffirmed Ireland’s commitment to maintaining diplomatic communication with Israel.

Responding to questions about Ireland’s stance on the Gaza war, Harris said, « Today, you ask about Ireland’s position. But what about Israel’s actions? What about Netanyahu’s practices against innocent children in Gaza? This is destruction diplomacy. »

Harris condemned the killing of children, the targeting of civilians, and Israel’s blockade preventing humanitarian aid from reaching Gaza, calling these actions reprehensible.

The closure of Israel’s embassy follows Israeli Foreign Minister Gideon Sa’ar’s announcement on Sunday, citing Ireland’s « anti-Israel policies » as the reason for the move.
