Syria’s de facto leader, Ahmed al-Sharaa, has been appointed president for a transitional period, according to the Syrian state news agency (SANA).
Al-Sharaa, leader of Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS), was also authorized to form a temporary legislative council to oversee the transition until a new constitution is adopted.
During a Damascus meeting of armed factions, military official Hassan Abdel Ghani announced the dissolution of all military factions, which will be integrated into state institutions. He also declared the disbandment of Assad’s former army, security agencies, and the Baath Party, which ruled Syria for decades.
Al-Sharaa has pledged a political transition, including a national conference, an inclusive government, and elections within four years.
