The head of Myanmar’s military council announced on Tuesday that the death toll from the recent earthquake has surpassed 2,700, with more than 4,500 people injured.
According to state media reports, General Min Aung Hlaing confirmed that 2,719 people had been killed, while 441 others remain missing following the 7.7-magnitude earthquake that struck the country last Friday.
The quake struck northwest of Sagaing in central Myanmar, followed by a 6.4-magnitude aftershock. It caused widespread destruction, collapsing buildings, bridges, and roads. Its impact was felt as far as Bangkok, where a 30-story building under construction collapsed.
Myanmar, located along the Sagaing Fault, has a history of major earthquakes, with six quakes of 7.0 or higher recorded between 1930 and 1956.
