Power outages across Spain, Portugal, and areas of southern France were widespread on Monday, causing traffic lights to go out and public transportation and airports to stop running. Officials have no clue as to why these outages occurred, but there is no evidence of wrongdoing.
« Grid operators in both countries are working to determine the cause and restore electricity supply, » European Council President Antonio Costa wrote on X.
The blackout began at about 10:30 GMT — the most effect was on metro systems, with metro services in Spain‘s biggest cities, Madrid and Barcelona, and in Lisbon, suspended due to the outages. Madrid-Barajas and Lisbon‘s Humberto Delgado airports underwent serious delays too. Southern France was also disrupted, but electricity was quickly restored.
