Tunisia to Announce Mediterranean Climate Alliance at UN Conference

On June 2, 2025, Tunisia’s Environment Minister Habib Abid announced that Tunisia will unveil a new alliance with Mediterranean countries at the upcoming UN conference in Nice to combat rising sea levels. A recent study with the World Bank shows Tunisia is the most threatened Mediterranean country.

Abid warned that 20% of the surface area of Tunisia’s 60 islands could be lost in the coming years. The alliance aims to share technical expertise, coordinate efforts among ministries, and secure funding for flood prevention and coastal protection.

He stressed that Tunisia, though not responsible for climate change, faces severe consequences and must push for stronger international climate action. Environmental diplomacy, he said, is now an urgent necessity.
