French retail giant Carrefour has announced its withdrawal from the Italian market, ending nearly two decades of activity in the country. The decision follows a sharp decline in sales amid fierce competition in the retail sector.
Carrefour reached an agreement with Italian group NewPrinces to sell all its Italian operations, including 1,188 stores, in a deal valued at around €1 billion. The transaction is expected to close by the end of the third quarter of 2025, pending regulatory approval.
While some observers pointed to recent boycott campaigns affecting Carrefour’s image, the company stated the move is part of a broader strategy to streamline operations and focus on more profitable markets.
