The Tunisian Ministry of Industry, Mines, and Energy held a meeting on Wednesday, August 27, 2025, to review progress on the Tunisia–Italy electricity interconnection project (ELMED). Chaired by Minister Fatma Thabet Chiboub, the session gathered senior officials, including Secretary of State for Energy Transition Wael Chouchane and representatives from STEG.
Officials confirmed the completion of bid evaluations for the high-voltage submarine cable and the first phase of selection for converter stations in Mlaabi, Nabeul, and Partanna, Sicily. The Mlaabi site will host Tunisia’s first HVDC-to-AC converter station.
Valued at about €1 billion, ELMED will feature a 220 km, 500 kV submarine cable with a 600 MW capacity, linking Tunisian and Italian grids. Scheduled for completion by 2028, the project aims to boost Tunisia’s energy security and prepare for integration into the future Euro-African electricity market.
