The British government has appointed Shabana Mahmood as Minister of Interior, making her the first Muslim woman in the country’s history to hold the post. She succeeds David Lammy, who was removed in a recent cabinet reshuffle.
Mahmood, a Labour MP for Birmingham Ladywood since 2010, described the role as “the honor of my life,” vowing to dedicate herself to protecting citizens.
Born in Birmingham in 1980 to a Pakistani Muslim family, Mahmood studied law at Oxford University and worked as a barrister before entering politics.
