Ancient Shipwreck Found in Turkiye Reveals 1,500-Year-Old Trade Links

Turkish scientists have discovered a 1,500-year-old shipwreck off the coast of Ayvalık in Balıkesir province, containing the largest collection of ancient ceramic plates found in the Aegean and Mediterranean seas.

The discovery is part of the « Blue Heritage: Turkish Shipwrecks » project, led by Harun Özdağ from 9 Eylül University.

The wreck, located 2.5 nautical miles from shore at a depth of 43 meters, is well-preserved due to its deep location. The site contains about 10,000 ceramic plates, offering valuable insights into ancient trade routes across the Mediterranean.
