Escape of 1,500 Prisoners in Mozambique

More than 1,500 detainees escaped from a prison in Maputo on Wednesday, taking advantage of unrest at the facility amid ongoing tensions in Mozambique. These tensions have persisted for a third consecutive day following the announcement of the ruling FRELIMO party’s victory in elections, which the opposition claims were marred by fraud.

National Police Chief Bernardino Rafael confirmed in a press conference on Wednesday evening that a total of 1,534 detainees fled the prison, located approximately 15 kilometers from the capital.
