New Earthquake Strikes Ethiopia with a Magnitude of 5.3

A 5.3-magnitude earthquake struck an area 25 kilometers northeast of Awash, Ethiopia, on the morning of Wednesday, January 8, 2025, according to the U.S. Geological Survey. The quake occurred at a depth of 10 kilometers, with its epicenter located at latitude 9.199°N and longitude 40.236°E.

No reports of casualties or material damage have been received so far.

This comes just days after a stronger 5.8-magnitude earthquake was reported on January 4, 2025, by the German Research Centre for Geosciences. That quake occurred 142 kilometers east of Addis Ababa, also at a depth of 10 kilometers.
