Tunisian FM Reaffirms Country’s Stance Against Being a Transit or Settlement Center for Irregular Migrants

On March 12, 2025, the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Migration, and Tunisians Abroad, Mohamed Ali Nafti, met with Azzouz Samri, IOM Head of Mission in Tunisia, to review ongoing cooperation programs, particularly the voluntary return of irregular migrants.

Minister Nafti discussed the program’s progress in 2024 and early 2025, stressing the need for coordination among stakeholders to ensure its success. He also called for increased awareness campaigns to inform migrants about voluntary return and reintegration options.

The IOM Official noted the regularity of these campaigns and praised the strong coordination with Tunisian authorities. Minister Nafti reaffirmed Tunisia’s refusal to be a transit or settlement country for irregular migrants and reiterated the country’s commitment to safe, dignified returns in line with international obligations.
