The Embassy of India in Tunis, in collaboration with the Tunisian Ministries of Foreign Affairs, Culture, Youth & Sports, Health, and the UN Mission in Tunisia, celebrated the 11th International Day of Yoga (IDY) on 21 June 2025 at the historic ‘Esplanade de Carthage’, in front of the National Museum of Carthage. This year’s theme was “Yoga for One Earth, One Health.”
- In her address, Ambassador H.E. Dr. Devyani Khobragade quoted PM Shri Narendra Modi:
“Yoga is an invaluable gift of India’s ancient tradition. It embodies unity of mind and body, thought and action, restraint and fulfillment, harmony between man and nature—a holistic approach to health and well-being.”
and emphasized the message of this year’s theme, highlighting the connection between human well-being and planetary health, echoing India’s philosophy of ‘Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam’. She thanked the Tunisian Government and the UN Mission for their support and acknowledged the presence of Chief Guest Mr. Nizar Ousji, UNDP Representative Ms. Celine Moyroud, Mayor of Carthage Byrsa Mr. Hamed Hannechi, President of local council of Carthage, Mr Said Laabidi and other dignitaries, the diplomatic corps, Indian community, and yoga enthusiasts.
- Ambassador also announced the launch of regular Yoga and Hindi classes at the Embassy starting 01 July 2025, inviting Tunisians to participate and promote holistic wellness and cultural exchange.
- Chief Guest Mr. Nizar Ousji praised the strong India-Tunisia ties, welcomed the celebration of IDY 2025 at the historic site of Carthage, and lauded the Embassy’s initiative to launch regular Yoga sessions and Hindi language classes from July 2025. UNDP Representative Ms. Celine Moyroud commended Yoga’s role in promoting harmony and wellness, and praised this year’s theme, emphasizing its heightened relevance in today’s global context.
- Set among ancient ruins overlooking the Mediterranean, the open-air session – led by Ambassador herself, who is a certified Yoga teacher along with Ms. Nihel Bechini, Embassy’s yoga instructor – attracted over 400 participants including Ambassadors, diplomats, Tunisian govenment officials, influencers, and Tunisian celebrities such as Miss World Talent 2024 Ms. Imen Mehrzi
- Preceding the main event, three yoga sessions were held in May and June at the Embassy, Ambassador’s residence, and Sidi Bou Said. The main IDY celebration was webcast live on Facebook.
