UN Report: Over 20% of Africans Faced Hunger in 2024

A new UN report on global food security and nutrition revealed that more than one in five Africans—around 307 million people—faced hunger in 2024, making the continent the most affected region worldwide.

The report, released on July 29, 2025, by five UN agencies, noted that Africa accounted for nearly half of the 673 million people globally who suffered from hunger last year.

While the global hunger rate dropped to 8.2% in 2024 (down from 8.5% in 2023), hunger continued to rise in most parts of Africa and West Asia. In West Asia alone, 12.7%—about 39 million people—were affected.
