A strong earthquake measuring 7.8 struck off the coast of Russia’s Kamchatka Peninsula on Thursday, according to the U.S. Geological Survey. The quake, which followed another major tremor in the region days earlier, hit 128 kilometers east of Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky at a shallow depth of 10 kilometers.
The U.S. and Pacific Tsunami Warning Center issued alerts of potentially dangerous waves along nearby coastlines.
