U.S. President Donald Trump on Saturday gave Iran a 48-hour deadline to reopen the Strait of Hormuz, warning that the United States would begin targeting Iranian power plants if the waterway remains closed.
In a post on Truth Social, Trump said that if Iran does not fully reopen the strait without threats, the U.S. will “hit and obliterate” Iranian power facilities, starting with the largest one. The warning marks a sharp shift from comments made a day earlier when he suggested the war could wind down even if the strait stayed closed.
The Strait of Hormuz crisis has become a central issue in the conflict, as the vital shipping route is key to global oil supplies.
Iranian Parliament Speaker Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf responded with a counter-threat, saying that any attack on Iran’s infrastructure would lead to strikes on energy and oil facilities across the region, warning that such escalation could push oil prices higher for a long period.
