Tunisian, French Presidents Discuss Partnership with EU and Migration Issues

Tunisian President Kais Saied received a phone call on March 20 from French President Emmanuel Macron, who congratulated Tunisia on the 70th anniversary of independence.

During this call, Saied emphasized the need to review Tunisia’s partnership agreement with the European Union to make it more balanced and fair. He also reiterated Tunisia’s commitment to recovering funds looted from the country, describing them as a legitimate right of the Tunisian people.

On migration, the Tunisian president called for stronger international efforts to support the voluntary return of irregular migrants, saying Tunisia has borne a heavy burden and refuses to become a transit or settlement country. He urged international organizations and northern countries to assume greater responsibility.

The two leaders also discussed the need for a renewed international framework, saying the global order established after World War II is gradually weakening and should be replaced with a more just system based on freedom and fairness, while stressing the importance of ending the suffering of the Palestinian people.
