Ivory Coast announced on Wednesday that French forces would be leaving its territory, bringing an end to decades of French military presence. This move is part of an increasing trend among African countries that are scaling back their military cooperation with France, the former colonial power.
Ivorian President Alassane Ouattara confirmed that the withdrawal process would begin in January 2025, effectively ending the presence of up to 600 French soldiers in the country. This announcement follows similar actions taken by leaders in other West African nations, such as Niger, Chad, and Burkina Faso, where French forces have been asked to leave.
