Mark Carney to Succeed Justin Trudeau as Canada’s Prime Minister

On March 9, 2025, Canada’s ruling party elected Mark Carney as its new leader and the country’s next prime minister, replacing Justin Trudeau. His appointment comes amid heightened tensions with the U.S. under Donald Trump’s presidency.

Carney, a 59-year-old former central banker and political newcomer, secured 85.9% of the party vote, as announced by Liberal Party President Sachit Mehra.

Trudeau had announced his resignation on January 6, 2025, but remained in office until his successor was chosen.
