Trump Imposes New Tariffs, Promising a Stronger Economy

The US President Donald Trump unveiled a series of new tariffs on Wednesday, calling it a « Liberation Day » during a speech at the White House.

Trump announced a 25% tariff on all foreign-made cars, set to take effect at midnight (ET), along with a minimum 10% tariff on nearly all imported goods. Countries with the largest trade deficits with the U.S. will face even higher tariffs. He argued that these measures will strengthen domestic manufacturing, increase competition, and ultimately lower prices for American consumers.

« We are putting America first, » Trump declared. « Today, we stand up for the American worker. »

The US President criticized foreign nations for benefiting from U.S. economic support while resisting fair trade agreements. « We take care of the world, and when we ask for fair trade, they get upset, » he said. « But now, we will take care of our people first. »

The White House confirmed that the tariffs would take effect immediately but indicated that Trump remains open to negotiations once they are in place.
