QatarEnergy Secures First Oil and Gas Exploration License in Algeria

On June 18, 2025, QatarEnergy secured its first oil and gas exploration license in Algeria as part of the country’s 2024 licensing round. The Ahara block, located in eastern Algeria, was awarded to a consortium including QatarEnergy (24.5%), TotalEnergies (24.5%, operator), and Sonatrach (51%).

QatarEnergy CEO Saad Sherida Al-Kaabi welcomed the milestone as a step toward expanding in North Africa. The 14,900 km² Ahara block lies between the resource-rich Berkine and Illizi basins.
