Google is facing a major cybersecurity crisis after hackers gained access to data from 2.5 billion Gmail users, according to a report by the Daily Mail.
The hacking group “ShinyHunters” allegedly infiltrated Google’s cloud-based database in June by tricking a company employee. While Google believes passwords were not compromised, the attackers reportedly stole a vast number of business files, including company names and scientists’ contact details.
Hackers have since used the stolen data for fraudulent calls and emails, posing as Google staff. Cybersecurity expert James Knight warned of serious risks, urging Gmail users to update weak passwords and enable multi-factor authentication.
