French Prime Minister Lecornu Resigns Within 24 Hours

Just hours after French Prime Minister Sébastien Lecornu announced his new cabinet, the Élysée Palace confirmed his resignation on Monday, deepening the ongoing political crisis in France.

According to a statement from the Élysée, Lecornu submitted his resignation to President Emmanuel Macron less than 24 hours after presenting his government lineup.

French television channel BFM, citing unnamed government sources, reported earlier that the newly appointed prime minister had stepped down and that President Macron had accepted his resignation.

Macron had appointed Lecornu as prime minister only a month ago, making him the seventh to hold the position during Macron’s presidency. The formation of Lecornu’s cabinet, announced on Sunday evening, was seen as an attempt to break France’s political deadlock and restore stability.
