Tunisia’s Parliament approved the draft law No. 63 for 2024, allowing Tunisia to join the Vienna Convention on Civil Liability for Nuclear Damage. The law passed with 101 votes in favor, 3 abstentions, and 6 against, in the presence of Minister of Higher Education, Monther Blaïd.
Blaïd stressed the importance of the convention, ensuring Tunisia could seek compensation for nuclear damages, and addressed concerns about national sovereignty. He also reassured MPs that no nuclear tests or waste had been found in Tunisia.
He announced that Tunisia is preparing a law to regulate peaceful nuclear uses and plans to establish a branch of the National Center for Nuclear Technology in Sfax by 2025. The Minister also revealed that 204 million dinars are allocated for scientific research in the 2025 budget.
The Vienna Convention, signed in 1963 and effective since 1977, aims to ensure compensation for nuclear damage caused by peaceful nuclear activities.
