On March 21, 2025, Sudan’s army has reclaimed the Presidential Palace in Khartoum, marking a major victory over the Rapid Support Forces (RSF), which have controlled large parts of the country since the war began in April 2023.
The conflict between the Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF) and RSF has led to one of the world’s worst humanitarian crises, with over 28,000 deaths and 11 million displaced, according to the Armed Conflict Location and Event Data initiative. The RSF had held Khartoum under siege, but on Friday, the government announced its forces had regained control of the palace and were advancing to retake the capital.
“Today the flag is raised, the palace is back, and the journey continues until victory is complete,” said Information Minister Khalid Al-Aiser. The justice ministry called the palace’s recapture a “symbol of national sovereignty.”
Activist Hala Al-Karib emphasized its significance for both the military and the millions displaced by the war.
