Colombia Appoints Its First Ambassador to Palestine

On Monday, May 26, 2025, the Colombian government announced the appointment of Jorge Iván Ospina as its first ambassador to the Palestinian territories.

This diplomatic move follows a significant shift in Colombia’s foreign policy. In May 2024, President Gustavo Petro, a leftist leader, announced the severance of diplomatic relations with Israel. He accused the Israeli government, under Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, of committing « genocide » in Gaza.

A year ago, Petro also announced the opening of a Colombian embassy in Ramallah, located in the occupied West Bank.
