Sicily: Sudden Eruption of Mount Etna Sends Tourists Fleeing

On Monday, June 2, 2025, dozens of tourists fled in panic after Mount Etna, one of the world’s most active volcanoes, erupted unexpectedly, sending a massive column of volcanic ash into the sky over the Italian island of Sicily.

Italy’s National Institute of Geophysics and Volcanology confirmed that the latest eruption caused a fast and dense pyroclastic flow, likely due to a partial collapse of the northern edge of the volcano’s southeastern crater.

A red-level aviation alert was briefly issued before being downgraded to orange.
