Gaza Declared as Disaster Zone

The Gaza government has declared the territory an environmental and structural disaster zone after Israeli attacks left nearly 70 million tons of debris and around 20,000 unexploded bombs and rockets.

Authorities say the destruction of thousands of homes and vital facilities has made Gaza unlivable, while debris removal is hindered by border closures and restrictions on heavy equipment.

The UN estimates reconstruction costs at $70 billion. Over two years of conflict have left nearly 68,000 dead and more than 170,000 injured, mostly women and children. A ceasefire between Hamas and Israel took effect Friday under a plan by U.S. President Donald Trump.
