Tunisia’s Secretary of State for Energy Transition met on Friday, January 23, with Italy’s Ambassador to Tunisia, Alessandro Prunas, to review progress on the ELMED electricity interconnection project linking Tunisia and Italy.
The meeting highlighted the strong Tunisian-Italian economic cooperation, particularly in renewable energy, and stressed the importance of close monitoring to ensure the success of joint projects. The Secretary of State underlined the strategic importance of completing the interconnection on schedule, noting its role in stabilizing Tunisia’s power grid and diversifying energy supply sources.
He also pointed to recent progress in reforming the legal framework for renewable energy projects, which has accelerated the launch of new initiatives. Several projects are already operational, while others are set to begin this year, with a total planned capacity of nearly 600 megawatts.
For his part, the Italian ambassador reaffirmed Italy’s commitment to supporting Tunisia’s energy transition, emphasizing that the ELMED project will enhance electricity exchanges between the two sides of the Mediterranean through a 600-megawatt bidirectional link.
