Ethiopia on Sunday urged neighboring Eritrea to “immediately withdraw its forces” from Ethiopian territory, accusing Asmara of escalating tensions between the two Horn of Africa nations.
In a statement, Addis Ababa condemned what it described as Eritrean military incursions and joint military maneuvers with rebel groups fighting Ethiopia’s federal government, warning that relations between the two countries are deteriorating.
Ethiopian Foreign Minister Gedion Timothewos said in a letter dated Saturday to his Eritrean counterpart that “recent events indicate that the Government of Eritrea has chosen a path of escalation.” He formally demanded that Eritrea withdraw its troops from Ethiopian soil without delay and cease all forms of cooperation with armed rebel groups.
