A multidisciplinary team is carrying out archaeological excavations at the Henchir El Matria site (ancient Numluli) in Béja, as part of a Tunisian–Italian cooperation project between the National Heritage Institute and Italy’s University of Sassari.
The work focuses on the public square and the Byzantine church, uncovering major Roman and Byzantine finds, including columns and capitals from the Capitoline Temple, statues of Roman gods, clay oil lamps, and valuable Byzantine mosaics.
Launched in 2022, the Italian mission aims to better understand Numluli’s urban layout and heritage. The project is conducted in coordination with the National Heritage Institute and funded by Italy’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, with support from the Italian Embassy in Tunis.
