Khaled Sehili held talks on Thursday with Matteo Perego di Cremnago, Italy’s Undersecretary of State for Defense, who led his country’s delegation to the 27th session of the Tunisian-Italian Joint Military Commission in Tunis.
During the meeting, attended by Italy’s ambassador to Tunisia, Khaled Sehili highlighted the strong historical ties between the two countries and the steady progress of military cooperation since the 1995 agreement. He praised the regular meetings of the joint commission and expressed Tunisia’s ambition to elevate cooperation to a strategic partnership, including new areas such as the military industry.
He also stressed the importance of continued coordination to address evolving regional and international challenges, noting that complex geopolitical and economic issues require joint efforts to ensure stability.
The minister commended Italy’s support for development projects in southern Tunisia, particularly in Rjim Maatoug and El Mohdeth, as well as its logistical assistance to the diving training institute in Zarzis.
On security, Sehili reaffirmed Tunisia’s role in combating terrorism and cross-border crime, emphasizing that tackling irregular migration requires a comprehensive, cooperative approach.
For his part, Matteo Perego di Cremnago reaffirmed Italy’s commitment to strengthening bilateral military cooperation, especially in training and expertise exchange, and praised Tunisia’s efforts in ensuring the success of joint programs.
The 27th session of the joint commission, held from March 24 to 26, concluded with the adoption of a cooperation program for the coming year.
