Following the fall of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad, German Chancellor Olaf Scholz stated that well-integrated Syrian refugees would not be deported. He assured those fluent in German and employed that they could feel secure in Germany, adding, « We will not ask them to leave their jobs. »
Interior Minister Nancy Faeser warned of labor shortages, particularly in healthcare, if Syrian refugees were repatriated. Health Minister Karl Lauterbach emphasized the importance of over 6,000 Syrian doctors integrated into the system.
Meanwhile, Austria has taken a different stance, offering around €1,000 to any Syrian refugee willing to return home. The contrasting policies highlight differing European responses to refugee integration and repatriation.
