At Least 86 Dead in South Africa Floods

Severe flooding in South Africa’s Eastern Cape province has left at least 86 people dead, authorities confirmed on Saturday. President Cyril Ramaphosa, who visited the region, blamed the « catastrophic disaster » on climate change.

The city of Mthatha was the hardest hit, with homes, roads, schools, and health facilities submerged under floodwaters that rose over four meters. Rescue teams are still searching for victims and survivors, with some residents having escaped to rooftops as the floods struck overnight.
