Addis Ababa and several other Ethiopian cities witnessed massive celebrations marking the official inauguration of the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam (GERD), one of Africa’s largest hydropower projects.
The event coincided with the start of the Ethiopian New Year, adding to the festive atmosphere. Citizens poured into the streets and onto vehicles, waving flags and chanting in a display of national pride that local media described as unprecedented in decades.
The GERD, seen as a milestone in Ethiopia’s quest for energy independence, is expected to transform the nation’s power generation capacity and stands as a powerful emblem of national unity.
