Morocco Declares Four Provinces Disaster Areas After Floods

The Moroccan government has declared four provinces disaster areas following severe floods that hit the country in recent months.

According to a statement from the Prime Minister’s Office, the exceptional weather disturbances experienced over the past two months have been officially classified as a natural disaster. The hardest-hit provinces — Larache, Kenitra, Sidi Kacem, and Sidi Slimane — have been designated as disaster zones.

The government has announced a support and assistance program with a projected budget of 3 billion dirhams (approximately $328.7 million). The plan was developed following a detailed field assessment and a thorough study of the economic and social impacts of the severe weather.

The floods affected more than 110,000 hectares of land and forced the evacuation of around 188,000 people across the four provinces.

Earlier this month, on February 7, four people lost their lives after flash floods struck the Tetouan province in northern Morocco.
